Favorite Place in the World?

There are an unlimited number of amazing and unique places to visit around the world, each offering something a little different.  But, for those of you who like to travel, you likely have just a few places that come to mind when asked "What's your favorite travel spot?"  While this is a very hard question, especially for those of us who truly love each and every place we've been, I wanted to share what comes to mind as my "favorite place."
Villa Balbianello - So beautiful they use it in the movies!

I should preface this by saying I've been fortunate enough to visit 37 countries in the world, and hope to someday see them all!  But, the one that sticks out in my mind is Italy, specifically Lake Como.  Likely you've heard of this town, whether it's because of Hollywood movies filmed here (Casino Royale, Ocean's Twelve, Star Wars Episode II) or due to celebrities who own villas (George Clooney). This small town is on the border of Italy and Switzerland, and is picturesque with cobblestone streets, outdoor cafes and the magnificant Italian Alps which seem to dive straight into the lake they surround.  It is easily reachable by train from Milan or local buses and ferries from other towns along the lakeshore (Bellagio, Menaggio, and Varenna).

Plenty of walkways and scenic views in Bellagio, Italy
It's the combination of Lake Como's amazing landscape, people, and food that make it my favorite place.  If you visit, make sure to take the funicular up to the tiny village of Brunate where you can wander around and see spectacular views of Como below.  Stroll through the town of Como itself and enjoy homemade gelato when the weather is warm.

Make sure to talk to the locals, everyone is so kind and engaging. We spent a couple hours talking with a waiter, who happened to also own a home in Florida, about sights to see and overall differences in life and culture between the US and Italy.  A great way to spend a day is to take the ferry to the small town of Bellagio and wander through the art galleries, shops, or along the shore.  Seeing the alps from the water is a sight I'll not soon forget.  Where is your favorite place in the world?  Let everyone know by leaving a comment below!

Take a boat ride - Best way to see the region!

  1. Favorite place in the world? Well, one would be Door County, Wisconsin. Quaint villages, wonderful shops, artists, food (& fish boil), state park, theater. Like the thumb on a left-handed mitten, Door County is a necessity to mention when you list the charms of Wisconsin.

  2. Florence, Italy! Beautiful landscapes and, of course, works of art since it's the birthplace of the Rennaisance! It feels very safe (at least during the day), and the people are friendly.

  3. The Yahoo news page just suggested buying domestic tickets 49 days in advance and tickets abroad 81 days in advance, so you'll save no matter what!!! I love your blog!

  4. Until I saw the first picture on your post, I thought the balcony scene in Star Wars: Episode II was filmed green screen with a CGI background. Apparently not.
