Make the most of Frequent Flyer Miles

The key to any good vacation is getting there, both literally and figuratively! Since I love to travel abroad, I’ve spent many hours researching and booking airline tickets. While tackling how airline pricing works is tricky, getting the most out of frequent flyer programs is not. In this post I’d like to share some tips I’ve learned to rack up the miles, allowing free flights (and vacations) to arrive faster.

To get the most bang for your buck, it’s best to pick one airline and, if possible, stick with it. (The price of the ticket should trump traveling with your “favorite” frequent flyer program. If sticking with one airline doubles the upfront ticket price, that typically isn’t worth it!) Keep in mind, though, it doesn’t hurt to join multiple airline programs because just one flight can get you a free magazine subscription or retail gift card. Airline miles aren’t just for free flights anymore!

Even though there are many domestic & international airlines, you’ll likely only need to join a few programs to have access to them all! For example, by joining United’s Mileage Plus program, you can earn United miles on any Star Alliance flight, including: Air Canada, US Airways, Swiss, Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, SAS, and many more! The main airline alliances are: Star Alliance, Oneworld and SkyTeam.

A major question remains: What is a frequent flyer mile worth? Typically, a mile is worth $0.01. If you’re debating using your miles for a weekend getaway, for example, and it’ll be either $200 cash for the ticket or 25,000 miles, normally it’s best to pay cash and save the miles for a ticket that costs more than $250. There are exceptions to every rule of course, especially if the miles are about to expire!

Miles $aved me $1,000 on this Europe Flight!
Airlines have charts indicating how many miles are required for free flights. Typically it takes about 12,500miles for a one-way ticket, 25,000-50,000 for a domestic flight and 50,000-100,000 for international flights, depending on how flexible you are with travel dates/times. Using these tips you’ll be taking off for another vacation before you know it!

  1. Could you name 3 or 4 places in the world that are off-the-beaten path but that are worth the extra effort to visit?

    Thanks!

    1. While it depends on what you as an individual like, I personally enjoy places with natural beauty! For this, I recommend Lake Como (Italy), Oia on Santorini (Greece), and taking a drive along Highway 1 between Carmel and Big Sur in California! Check back - I'll have posts about these places and more!

  2. Here’s another trick I learned from some co-workers. Frequent flyer miles often have 2 for 1 deals, where you can buy miles and get double the number that you pay for. Then you can use those miles for flights. My co-worker flew round-trip from Sydney to London first-class for about $2,500. That would normally cost around $15,000.

  3. You're right that Carmel is off the beaten path (according to my map), so is it really as beautiful as everyone says? Is the "17-mile drive" worth it?
    Thanks!!

    1. "17-mile drive" within the Pebble Beach Gated Community requires a payment of US$9.75 for nonresidents. Due to this, I recommend people drive on Highway 1 south of Carmel where there's still amazing views of the Pacific Coast!
