Welcome!

Looking to save money? Who isn't, right? I've started this blog because I love a good deal, and wanted to share some tips I've learned to save you money too! It'll be full of both day-to-day money saving tips as well as special advice for traveling and saving money abroad!

A little about me - I'm a postdoctoral fellow doing cancer research at Stanford University. I'm also an avid traveler, hoping to someday visit every country in the world! Often friends ask how I'm able to travel so much on a meager postdoc salary. The answer is budgeting in my everyday life, which allows me to put all those extra "pennies saved" toward exciting trips around the world! I'll share some pictures from my adventures, along with how I was even able to save money on what might be considered exotic & extravagant vacations. Hope you enjoy my posts and are able to use my tips to save a little moola, allowing you to enjoy life to the fullest!

Cheers,
Liz

  1. Since you are in the Bay Area, can you suggest a fun but reasonable plan for a San Francisco vacation? Thanks!

    1. Great question! There's so much to do in San Francisco itself, including a ferry ride to Alcatraz, biking across the Golden Gate bridge, visiting the Japanese Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park and taking a cable car to Union Square! Check back - I'll have a post about money saving tips for San Francisco, Napa Valley, as well as several other cities in the US and Europe!

  3. Can you give advice for going to southeast or southwest Florida? I'm planning a vacation. Have you tried the organization VRBO? (I think it means vacation rental by owner.) Are they legit?

    1. VRBO is legit, and can often provide a larger rental unit for a lower cost than a hotel! Beware though, this is typically better for longer stays, since owners often charge cleaning fees per stay.

  4. When we were in London, we toured the Victorian museum on the day of the week when it was free! Big cities will often have one day per week when museums are free, usually mid-week!

Similar to VRBO is Homeaway.com They are both reliable.

  5. Two great ideas were in a recent issue of TIME:
If you go to ParkatMyHouse on the internet, you can find a close-to-airport parking place. The example they gave was a driveway one mile from LAX for $12 per day.

Second, the website Airbnb is a 2012 version of the bed and breakfast directory. For example, a room in Paris is $59 per day!

    1. I haven't used those sites myself, but thanks for the tips and I'll check them out! Some European friends recommended the Airbnb too!

  7. Thanks for dropping by at my travel & trends blog in wordpress.com
I believe in what you said. Sometimes, you need to give up few things to see the world. And once you step on the soil of what you have been planning and saving for months, you can't help but say, it's all worth it. Good luck on your travel plans.
